The most frequently specified stainless steel used worldwide is type 304/304L, a contemporary variant of “18-8” stainless steel that contains roughly 18% chromium and 8% nickel. A flexible, all-purpose stainless steel, type 304/304L 5mm stainless steel sheets offer good resistance to air corrosion as well as to numerous chemicals, foods, and beverages. These grades have excellent formability when they are annealed. Type 304L has lower carbon content, thus being extra strong in 5mm thick sheets.
A molybdenum-containing austenitic stainless steel with chromium and nickel content is type 316/316L. This addition improves corrosion resistance in halide conditions as well as with acids like sulfuric and phosphoric acid. Also, type 316L is often specified for welded applications. Type 316/316L is resistant to corrosion in both atmospheric and mildly oxidizing conditions.
