NEC 314.3

Non-metallic junction boxes can only be used with non-metallic wiring methods or specific cables, which include non-metallic sheathed cable (such as Romex/NM cable), non-metallic conduit (such as PVC electrical tubing or ENT flexible corrugated tubing), flexible cords, open wiring on insulators, or knob-and-tube wiring.

NEC 314.15 Damp Area

This section establishes requirements for protecting junction boxes installed in wet locations. It regulates that all the boxes that are installed in wet locations (such as outdoors, underground, car washes, etc.) must be strictly waterproof junction boxes. Depending on environmental exposure, enclosures rated NEMA 3R, NEMA 4, or NEMA 4X may be used to comply with NEC requirements for wet locations.

NEC 314.20

To prevent internal arc sparks from directly contacting the flammable structures inside the wall, NEC 314.20 stipulates the extent to which the front edge of the junction box can be recessed into the wall when it is installed inside the wall, ceiling, column, etc.

  • For noncombustible walls (such as concrete, tile, plaster, etc.), the front edge of the junction box should be set back by no more than 1/4 inch.
  • For combustible walls (such as wood, plywood, etc.), the front edges of junction boxes must have no indentation.

If the surface around the junction box is damaged, broken, or incomplete, it must be repaired to ensure that the gap between the outer edge of the junction box and the wall material is absolutely no larger than 1/8 inch.
