Hydroforming Aircraft Parts

This is a technology that uses pressurized liquid media to generate preferred shapes from tubular material. This process uses high pressure hydraulic fluid to press room temperature working material.

To hydroform a metal, a hollow tube of metal is placed inside a negative mold having the shape of desired result.

High pressure hydraulic pump injects at very high pressure causing it to expand until it matches the mold.

This process uses the technology where force great enough to cause the material to fail is applied. Shearing force is the commonly used force hence is also termed as shearing process.

When shear force is applied, it stresses in the material making it exceed the ultimate shear strength causing the material to fail and separate at the cut location.

This is a process that uses punch press to force a tool through the work piece to create a hole through shearing. Usually a punch passes through a work into a die.

Here sheet metal is stretched and bent simultaneously over a die forming a contoured part.

This process is performed on a stretch press where metal sheet is securely gripped along its edges by gripping jaw.

These jaws are attached to a carriage pulled by hydraulic force to stretch the sheet.

Stretch form block which is solid contoured against where the sheet metal will be pressed. Usually it is vertically oriented whereby form die rests on a press table that can be raised into the sheet by hydraulic ram.

As the die is driven into the sheet, the tensile forces increases and the sheet deforms into a new shape.

Welding Sheet Metal

The most commonly used welding process is seam welding which is divided into two: –

I. Resistance Seam Welding

In this process electric current is passed through sheets of metals to be joined while they are held together. During this process they are held together by a coppers shaped electrode

Fusion is usually produced where the sheet surface come into contact, since this is the bending point of the highest electrical resistance. Heat from the disc shaped electrodes creates a weld as work pieces are fed to them.

This results into a rolling resistance weld.

II. Friction Seam Welding

This process uses friction to create heat for the joint. Work pieces are joined in the solid phase without melting the materials.
